Liposuction. A perfectly smooth bodily curve gives a feeling of vitality and youth. During life, redistribution of body fat occurs. Problem zones for women are usually the hips, abdomen, buttocks, thighs, outer sides and sometimes upper arms and inside knees. Men tend to collect their fat around the abdomen chest and flanks. Regions such as the neck or double chin can also be treated effectively. The extraction of fat deposits to larger amounts of adipose tissue, is the worlds most frequently performed surgery in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Although these operations are now being offered by non-specialist doctors, they should be performed by a highly trained aesthetic plastic surgeon.
Appropriate body parts for Liposuction

- Upper Arms
- Male Breast
- Chin and Neck
There are also diseases of localised or generalised accumulations of fat that can be treated or improved by liposuction. These include inter alia Madelung's disease (benign symmetric lipomatosis), Dercum's disease (Lipomatosis dolorous), Lipohypertrophy (symptom-free adipose tissue in the extremities) and arising from painfrum Lipoedema (Lipohypertrophia dolorosa).
Liposuction does not replace the general diet or weight-loss. However, certain parts of the body are often so persistent, despite dieting, exercise and healthy eating habits, and cannot be effectively reduced with these methods. These areas can be specifically and carefully removed with liposuction to achieve a harmonious body contour. In order to establish the most suitable results, you should already be close to your ideal weight. Liposuction contours the body and helps you deal with your problem areas. The fat cells removed will not return to this region. However, it is possible that over eating will result in the accumulation of fat cells in other areas.
Liposuction is not about trivialising intervention. It should be carried out by a specialist physician with the appropriate knowledge and skills and training in aesthetic plastic surgery. It is an operation that requires prevention, care, sterility - like any other surgery! The method also has its limits. As your plastic surgeon, I can estimate these limits. For example, it is often useful to limit the amount of fat sucked out, for the safety of the patient. After a few months, the procedure can be repeated if it is necessary to excavate large quantities in stages. Accordingly, you should plan a few days off to relax after your liposuction in peace. If you are back in shape sooner, all the better.
In general, liposuction is carried out under local anaesthesia, after the so-called tumescent infiltration (saline solution of anaesthetic and adrenaline) are performed on outpatients, or short-stay patients. For larger procedures, we recommend an overnight stay with us.
After a short exposure time, the fat cells are extracted with fine (2-4mm thick) needles. This is gentle and usually painless. An additional means of calming sedation or general anaesthesia from an experienced doctor is always available if you wish.
In the first few days after surgery, significant amounts of liquid will leak from the extraction points. This can necessitate the regular exchange of absorbent bandages. This is normal, desirable, and will soon decrease. An appropriate compression garment should be worn for the next 6-8 weeks to promote the shrinkage of skin to the new body contour. After a few days only small bandages at the injection sites are needed. Showering is allowed after 1-2 days, but taking baths should still be avoided. Only very few patients complain of pain after the procedure. Common painkillers such as ibuprofen (or similar) in the first few days after the procedure are usually sufficient. Some single threads are usually removed after the first 8-10 days. The final result can usually only be seen after a few months when all swelling has gone down.
For every operation:
Do not take blood thinning drugs such as aspirin, ASS, Plavix, Warfarin etc, 14 days before the elective surgery!
